Booking the smash
Before the smash
Cupcake training - a couple of weeks before the smash try a small cupcake, let them feel the icing between their fingers and try not to clean them up straight away.
Things to bring - a change of clothes, favourite snacks that can be hidden behind the cake, lots of baby wipes and a drink smashing cake can be thirsty work…. also make sure parents are wearing old clothes as cake gets everywhere…!! Brand new for 2021 - I have a number of small tubs to match the cake smash themes so after your little one is covered in cake they can take a dip and go home clean. Can you also bring a couple of towels and baby bubble bath/shampoo to create bubbles.
The day of the shoot
we start the session with a quick 5 min shoot so the baby is used to me, the studio lights and their new surroundings before we introduce the cake.
Every baby is different some will demolish it within seconds, some will try to eat the whole thing not even wanting to look up for a quick smile but most babies will take their time, we start off really slowly and let the baby get used to the cake before trying things like flipping the cake or standing on top of it.
I take lots of images in a short space of time because I don’t know when the smash will be over, one minute baby is loving life sat on top of the cake and then next minute total meltdown because they got cake on their foot….. meltdowns are fine…!! take a break, have a nosey out of the window, a little dance or a drink and then we can try again once everyone is in a better mood.
From experience the only time a smash hasn't gone to plan is because the baby is poorly, let me know asap and we can rearrange.
